So
Wednesday, considered the most auspicious day of the week, I thought of writing
about music. Now I can update all Wednesdays as musical Wednesdays.
In
spite of me learning Carnatic music for ten years, current status I am at
ground -1(minus one), so I will have to do a lot of groundwork before I try to
put up the right information.
I
had to get help and more information from a senior of mine to whom I have referred
in my earlier post as well, Vikash Achutaramaiah Ryali for the songs and
information required for this post.
Also
I will have to give credit to my brother’s who influenced me in what I want to
be and how I want to be. Also, they are the reason I am hearing to good music
these days on my IPod, my Mobile, my music systems and all modes possible.
Also
I should thank my friends who have shared details of good music whenever they
get it.
When
I thought of music, I came across many blogs and pages where they had
information by conducting a cross-section and a detailed postmortem on the
songs, so its difficult for me to provide the same and I cannot do it more
perfect than many out there. So I thought I will update only a reference of music
relating to the Carnatic ragas and Indian film Songs (mostly Tamil).
Ragas
are the modes used in Indian classical music. A raga uses a
series of musical notes upon which a melody is
constructed. However, the way the notes are approached and rendered in musical
phrases and the mood they convey are more important in defining a raga than the
notes themselves.
In
the Indian musical tradition, Ragas are associated with different times of the
day, or with seasons. Indian classical music is always set in a Raga.
Non-classical
music such as popular Indian film songs and gazals sometimes use Raga in
their compositions.
So I
thought, to start with I will update with Kalyani as it is famous in South Indian weddings
and this is most prominently played Raga.
The word Kalyani means she who causes auspicious things.
The word Kalyani means she who causes auspicious things.
Prince Rama Varma his brief talk on Raga Kalyani, this helps us understand the raga easily in just 30 minutes maximum !
So
now we know how kalyani is in Carnatic and its similarity in Hindustani ghazal,
here are a few Famous Tamil movie songs that we might have come across.

Kindly
update your comment if you find more songs for raga Kalyani. I was able to get these in a short time
as I missed my schedule by a day and had to post this in a hurry burry note.
So
on my next musical wed, will come up with another raga and its relevant songs.
